Inspired by this latest UNDERWATER’s fourth LIE-themed Collection of Spring Summer 2022, I think I’ve finally got a grasp of the description I have been looking for UNDERWATER. As you may know, UNDERWATER depicts the designer’s imagination in which all UNDERWATER’s pieces are designed for people living in the underground cities of a post-apocalyptic world. With that, comes the brand's decay, and distressed aesthetics.
However, there’s something different about UNDERWATER’s distressed style. Now, I believe the adjective I've been looking for is elegance. Unlike other vintage, retro-styled distress brands, UNDERWATER’s works are much more clean and elegant. Somehow the designer combines a modern minimalistic aesthetic with the retro, decay, and distressed style. That’s why its garments have a completely different vibe. A great comparison would be the recent Balenciaga “full destroyed” PARIS HIGH TOP - an $1850 sneaker. They are both distressed styles but they are different types of distressed styles at the opposite ends of the spectrum.
To me, everything in this collection, like all the other UNDERWATER products, is so clean and elegant. Especially the Raw Edge Canvas Half-Shirt and Shorts in this drop. The designer is very careful about the color, even if it’s the most basic tones. The black has an ever-slightest grey and the white has a creamy apricot vibe.
Hope you enjoyed my latest interpretation of UNDERWATER’s design as well as this new collection. Please check out the details of each piece as always. Enjoy the elegance!
